Alternative Berlins Top Five For May

Well after an exciting May 1st full of the usual shenanigans and demonstrations, here at Alternative Berlin HQ we’ve put together our list of events we think our definitely worth checking out in the city this month. We’ve been getting a lot of lovely feedback over on our Instagram account (@alternativeberlintours) from you about how helpful our guides are in pointing you in the direction of things that might interest you. They’re a great resource for tips on where to eat, see the more unusual sites or party, so make sure you hit them up when you’re out on a tour with us!

1. Bite Club Season Launch – Arena Berlin, Eichenstraße 4 – May 12th

You know it’s really spring in Berlin when the famous Bite Club is back in business. We are so ready to eat delicious food, drink delicious drinks and relax by the Spree with some feel-good music thrown in for good measure. Bite Club invites the best street food vendors in town to cook for you, and it’s a treat to find them all in one location. There will also be a cocktail bar, craft beer and speciality wines on offer to loosen everyone up for a bit of a dance to the DJ’s who are ready to kick-start your weekend. There is no ticket or entrance fee for this super popular event but get there early!

2. Handgemacht – Frühlingsedition ’17 – Kulturbrauerei Berlin, Schönhauser Allee – May 19th-21st

The clue is in the name for this one. Handgemacht, for those of you who don’t deutsch, means “handmade”. This is another great “yes it’s THAT season” outdoor event at a great location. 25 different breweries and street food vendors will be on hand over the weekend, from 4pm Friday and mid-day Saturday and Sunday to offer you their wares. We know one thing for certain; we’re going to be a lot fatter by the end of May.

3. 90’s Breakout | die verrückte 90er Party an der Spree – Spindler & Klatt, Köpenicker Straße 16-17 – May 20th

Spindler & Klatt is another great Spree side location for this “crazy 90’s party”. Here at HQ we’re not entirely ready for 90’s nostalgia, having lived through it the first time round, but this is a young and fun party that boasts free shots, a photo booth and some seriously “retro” (sigh) music. They are promising to play some 80’s classics too. If being down with the kids is your thing, this night will be a LOL. Did we get that right?

4. Soli Tattoo Fest #2 – 19:28 Tattoo Club, Altenbraker strasse, 3 – May 27th

Soli events are big in Berlin. It’s part of what makes being here so special. People regularly donate their time, skills, and effort to helping those less fortunate than themselves, to give back to the community. This event is run by a group of tattoo artists who get together to support a good cause, by giving away the money from the tattoos made at the fest to the people who need it.  Six different artists will be offering flash designs and donating the proceeds to the Siblings Family Project. There will also be pizza, again, with all profit going to a good cause. Get tattooed, eat pizza and gain some good karma!

5. Gimme Danger (OmU) by Jim Jarmusch – Special Outdoor Screening – Freiluftkino Insel im Cassiopeia, Revaler Strasse 99 – May 30th

Another spring staple, the outdoor cinema! It’s a real thing here to sit outside for a screening as soon as the weather permits. In fact Berliners will be spending as much time outside as is humanly possible having survived another long winter. There are quite a few outdoor kinos but we’ve chosen this one, as the movie is an in-depth look at the legendary punk band, The Stooges featuring Iggy Pop, by the legendary Jim Jarmusch. ROCK N ROLL!
