Alternative Berlins Top Five For November

We really like this time of year in Berlin. Sure the days are shorter, and the cold is creeping in, but as the seasons change there’s still a real buzz and a billion reasons to wrap a scarf around you and head out. There are many more early evening gatherings at art exhibitions or concerts (now that drinking beers by the canal has lost its charm) We’ve picked five of this month’s most fun and interesting events to help you get your November in Berlin planned, but be warned no one is allowed to mention Christmas markets. NOT YET.

1. Schlomo’s Bagels Grand Opening – Kollwitzstraße 44- November 4th

bagels

Schlomo’s is a brand new New York style café, and Friday is it’s opening party. Prepared fresh on the day the range of bagels, juices and coffees are exactly what you need to keep you insulated against the Berlin winter chills. There’s plenty of pastrami but also a good choice of vegetarian and vegan options. This place is set to put itself firmly on the foodie map, so expect a very tasty party on the 4th.

2. GAT “Grüsse Aus Tätowierungen”- Berliner Straße 80-82 – November 5th

tattoos

Every year the GAT team curate a huge exhibition. Tattoo artists are invited to submit artwork with a certain theme. This year the theme is the “1980’s”. It’s always interesting to see how diverse the different designs and styles are, it’s also always one hell of a party. Expect live bands and DJ’s that play all night as Berlin celebrates tattoo culture in typical Berlin style.

3. Vernissage Wasteland – A Space Under Construction, Ritterstr. 26 – November 5th.

Another exhibition opening this month that’s a must see is artist Marcela Magdalena Bracalenti’s first German exhibition, “Wasteland”. The exhibit will include more than 50 artworks, a combination of large-format abstract collages and 3D objects created though the artist’s use of everyday and industrial materials (Upcycling Art) and explores the artists complex, personal view of the rugged inner and outer landscapes during Argentina’s political dark time. The exhibition venue, A Space Under Construction, is worth mentioning, the space is not a gallery in the classical sense but sees itself “as an open platform for the realization of creative ideas”. We expect to see plenty more of these ambitious exhibitions from them in future.

4. The House Of Red Doors – Salon – Zur wilden Renate – November 24th

red-doors

Now a firm favourite on the Berlin party circuit this is not the first or last time we will mention the now infamous House Of Red Doors. Hosted by Bad Bruises (a terrible twosome of alternative Berlin guides!) this is an immersive party where theatre, art and fetish combine with the club scene. It’s not for the faint of heart but certainly won’t fail to entertain. This parties theme is “circus”, so Berlin’s favourite freaks will all be out for what again promises to be an epic night.

5. Meshuggah Plus High On Fire- Astra Kulturhaus Berlin- November 22nd

We can’t pick events and NOT choose at least one live band. We get a lot of people on our tours who are in town having travelled to see their favourite band play and more often than not there is more than one gig we would want to be at on the same night! Here at alternative Berlin we like it LOUD, so our not to miss this month is extreme metal band the mighty Meshuggah. Rolling Stone once labelled them as “one of the ten most important hard and heavy bands”, and the Alternative Press named them the “most important band in metal”. We expect good things!

It always seems impossible for us to choose just five events to share with you, so we’ll post all the information you might need about any other interesting alternative Berlin events to our Facebook page, so you can check in and see what’s on over the rest of November. Have fun!
